When you see this picture, where do you think it was taken? Boyaca? Europe? Africa? The States?
I’ve had the fortune to meet people from around the world since I was 16, but me, being a sentimental cancer zodiac sign person, didn’t see the grace to that until much, much later in life.
At 16, I wanted to be home with my mom, my sisters, my friends, being mischievous with a teenage love, having warm, yummy mommy meals and snuggling in her bed, but instead, I was sleeping on a sofa bed, getting to know my uncle, having 5 hours of English class per day, eating beans from a can and watching univision. I was brewing in the Latino society of New York City (in the 90s -beware!)
Oh! Life… wonderful New York with its rats, garbage cans, subway singers, cops and donuts, tons of tourists, and every-language-on-the-planet being spoken here! Yet, some of us have a love and hate relationship with the city. I’ve left 3 times. Come back 3 times. (TBC)
One of those escapades was to wonderful Berlin, Germany. I wanted to study a masters degree that would put me in a job that I never got, but the experience of living there?!?! Woof! Wow! Plop! (A uno nadie le quita lo bailao’) priceless.
During my stay, I got to know exceptional people, and we happened to travel together. This was one of those trips, one girl from Honduras, one from Burundi and me, from Colombia, all going to Luxemburg. What a trip! The food, the scenery, the craziness of history and territorial demands, languages, and laws, you name it! But at the end of the day, we went back to the apartment, ate a warm meal, talked about our day, and planned our following day.
We were all from different walks of life, had different experience and yet all wanted the same thing for our lifes: forcus and our families to be healthy, live in peace, love and have a warm meal.
This whole story to say that we are all the same, just with a “different” appearance… (somos el mismo animalito, vestido diferente)
